November/December 2023
A WORD FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT, THERESA SPENCER
As we close out 2023, the NMPBS team is reflecting on what an outstanding year it has been for us. We are proud to have continued to provide each and every person in the NMPBS community with beloved and trusted programs, and we can’t express our gratitude for your support enough.
There is an air of anticipation at the station as we look forward to 2024. Each new year brings new opportunities, and we can’t wait to share those opportunities with you. It’s important to us that we remain steadfast in our commitment to give you the information, entertainment, and knowledge you deserve.
NMPBS is finishing out the year with an exciting array of programs, including Groundbreakers, The Earthshot Prize, and Call the Midwife Holiday Special.
We hope our programming is part of your safe, relaxing holiday season. From all of us at NMPBS — thank you, and happy holidays.
Keep up the good work!

The holiday special will close out the year with more drama, excitement, and holiday commemoration.

Give Smart — Plan Ahead
It’s not too late to make a 2023 charitable gift with your IRA. If you want to support NMPBS and make a lasting impact, you have two great options through your IRA: a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) or lifetime income from a charitable gift annuity.
Each year, the IRS requires you to withdraw a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from your IRA. If you are at least 70½ years old, you can make a gift, a QCD, from your IRA without penalty. Give a one-time gift to NMPBS without increasing your taxable income.
Or, use your IRA to fund a charitable gift annuity, which creates lifetime income for you through a gift to NMPBS. If you are age 70½ or older, you can convert up to $50,000 of your IRA into a stream of income without paying federal income tax on the principal.
Advantages of funding a lifetime income gift from your IRA:
- Guaranteed income for life with an NMPBS charitable gift annuity
- Meet your RMD without adding to your taxable income
- Significant support for NMPBS

Your Questions Answered:
Why does your schedule change during your fund drives?
As a not-for-profit public media company, NMPBS tries very hard to please a broad range of viewers and viewing interests, and during our fundraising periods, we do attempt to attract the largest and most supportive audiences possible.
We schedule special programming to attract new members as well as to offer current supporters different programs. While the regular schedule will sometimes be rearranged, you never miss any episode of your favorite programs. And the opportunity to stream PBS programming gives you a greater opportunity to watch those favorite programs.
It might surprise you to learn that the audiences for these pledge programs are very supportive. Our goal is to be as effective as possible in the shortest amount of time possible. The actual breaks represent less than 2% of our overall airtime, but the results help make all your favorite programming possible.
Member support is the largest source of revenue for NMPBS and it allows the station to remain as the ONLY locally owned and operated media entity.
The only way NMPBS can continue to provide this alternative is through community support … particularly from individuals!
I love your programming and your philosophy. Thank you so very much for the years of superior programming. I am on a fixed budget and so happy that I have some money to send you!
