SUMMER 2025

A WORD FROM OUR GENERAL MANAGER, DEANNA MACKEY

KPBS began our year-long 65th birthday celebration last month with a focus on service by hosting Be My Neighbor Day, for more than 1,500 families who joined us to learn more about KPBS, meet Daniel Tiger and Katerina Kitty Kat and participate in community service activities.

Looking ahead, we have a lot of fun summer programming for you to enjoy, including dinosaurs, sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat dramas and a uniquely San Diego story about the beloved Hotel Del. We are also busy planning our first annual San Diego Book Festival. Join us on August 23 at the University of San Diego to enjoy panel discussions with award-winning authors, activities, live entertainment, exhibitors including independent booksellers and more.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the backdrop of federal funding threats that are continually on my mind. You may have seen the headlines out of Washington indicating the White House is requesting rescission of all funding to the public media system. We need community support now more than ever to share why our service is essential in San Diego and across the country. Here are a few ways you can get involved in protecting the programs and services you care about:

● Connect with Protect My Public Media to learn more about funding for public media in the U.S. federal budget and how you can help.
● Share your public media moment story with us. Fill out this brief form and let us know what public media means to you.
● Follow @kpbssandiego on social media or subscribe to our email newsletters for our latest reporting, programs, events and more.
● Remember the power of community. Help spread the word about the importance of public media by talking with your family, friends and neighbors.

All of us here at KPBS love being here for you and believe in the power of public media as a means to strengthen our democracy and empower San Diegans to make our region amazing. We are committed to telling your stories and engaging with our community for at least another 65 years. Thank you for being our partner in this work.

Every contribution makes a difference.

Set against the historic backdrop of York, “Patience” is a gripping new crime drama that introduces a gifted autistic archivist with a knack for seeing what others miss. When detective Bea Metcalf notices her uncanny ability to connect clues, she draws Patience into the world of criminal investigation. But Patience isn’t just uncovering mysteries—she’s hiding one of her own.

As the duo dives into a series of cold cases, including a bizarre museum death and a reclusive writer’s locked-room demise, tensions rise. Patience is even questioned as a suspect, pushing her to the brink. Each case uncovers new dangers and tests the growing bond between Patience and Bea, especially as Bea navigates personal doubts about her son’s potential ADHD diagnosis.

Smart, suspenseful and emotionally rich, “Patience” is a must-watch mystery full of unexpected twists and a heroine unlike any other. Fans of “Astrid” from Walter Presents will want to note that “Patience” is an English-language adaptation of that French series.

“Patience” airs Sunday, June 15, at 8 p.m. on KPBS-TV. Watch live or stream.

“Historic Places with Elsa Sevilla” has documented the extraordinary Hotel Del Coronado restoration project since 2018. For co-producers Elsa and Guillermo Sevilla, it has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity—a rare front-row seat to history in the making.

This final episode in this three-part series is the most exhilarating chapter yet—an unforgettable journey through the restoration of the Hotel del Coronado’s iconic Victorian Building, filled with remarkable discoveries and behind-the-scenes moments captured exclusively by their cameras.

At the top of the list: a breathtaking hidden fresco in the Ocean Ballroom, concealed for decades and now fully restored. Just as thrilling, a rare courtyard fountain has been replicated, glistening with its original charm.

A historic photograph led to the discovery of a long-lost grand window. The once-vanished veranda has been reconstructed, reviving the hotel’s elegance. History isn’t just preserved—it comes alive.
