This year marks an important milestone for our nation: 250 years since 13 British colonies claimed their independence and stood united for the values of freedom, liberty and democracy. In light of this milestone, KPBS is curating an America250 collection of stories, programs and events that help us reflect upon the ideals we aspire for the next generation. We are also coming up on the one year anniversary of the day Congress eliminated funding to public media. I am frequently asked how KPBS is doing in light of the loss of federal funding. I am pleased to share that we have 20,000 new members who have joined us since July 2025. This amazing member growth, combined with increased donations from long-time supporters, filled our budget gap through June 2026. Beginning July 1, we start over again. However, I am optimistic that both our long-time and new members believe in the same thing — KPBS provides an essential service and it must continue.

America at 250
As the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, KPBS invites you to reflect, celebrate, and connect with two powerful programs.
“Declarations: Black Americans and the Revolutionary War” offers a deeper look at the pursuit of freedom, sharing stories of courage and resilience that helped shape our nation. Then, celebrate America’s 250th with “A Capitol Fourth,” including patriotic tributes, and a spectacular fireworks display from the nation’s capital—honoring the spirit and story of our country.
Together, these programs honor both the celebration and the complexity of America’s story.
“Declarations: Black Americans and The Revolutionary War” airs Monday, June 29, at 10 p.m. on KPBS-TV.

Rethinking 1775
What if early American history looked different depending on where you stood? In this four-part episode of “Historic Places with Elsa Sevilla,” 1775 is reframed by placing San Diego and the East Coast side by side. While Kumeyaay warriors resisted Spanish invasion at Mission San Diego, colonial militias faced British troops at Lexington and Concord.
Two acts of resistance—two very different outcomes. The episode explores Indigenous governance, colonial disruption, and why one uprising shaped a nation while another was suppressed. The Kumeyaay never ceded their land. Their story continues.

River of Life
Carving through canyons and deserts, the Colorado River is the lifeblood of “The American Southwest” — but its future is far from certain. As water demand rises and dams reshape its natural flow, the balance between people, wildlife, and the environment grows more fragile.
Along this iconic river, extraordinary stories unfold. Beavers reshape the landscape, elk call across open valleys, and condors soar above ancient cliffs—each playing a vital role in a delicate ecosystem. At the same time, Indigenous voices bring a deeper understanding of the land, its history, and what’s at stake.
Narrated by environmental advocate Quannah Chasinghorse, “The American Southwest” is a visually stunning and thought-provoking journey that reveals both the beauty of this region and the urgent need to protect it for generations to come.

As she documents his final year in the classroom, their differences spark tension—but also unexpected understanding. It’s a powerful, personal story about listening, connection, and finding common ground in a divided world.

North Coast Repertory Theatre Unveils Its Dynamic 2026-2027 Season
North Coast Repertory Theatre in Solana Beach is thrilling audiences with its ambitious 2026-2027 season — eight productions spanning world premieres, West Coast debuts, a Broadway hit and an intimate beloved musical revival.
The season launches with the West Coast Premiere of “Goodnight, Oscar” (Sept. 16–Oct. 11), followed by the Broadway hit “The Cottage” (Oct. 28–Nov. 22). The holidays bring the world premiere play-with-music “How to Write a Holiday” (Dec. 16–27 which is not included in the subscription package.) The new year kicks off with the West Coast Premiere of Steven Dietz’s thriller “Vineland Place” (Jan. 6–31), then George Bernard Shaw’s classic comedy “Misalliance” (Feb. 24–Mar. 21). Spring delivers an intimate revival of “My Fair Lady” (Apr. 14–May 9), followed by the San Diego Premiere of “Ken Ludwig’s Dear Jack, Dear Louise” (Jun. 2–27). The season closes with the world premiere musical “Gene Wilder’s My French Whore” (Jul. 14–Aug. 8).
