A WORD FROM OUR GENERAL MANAGER, DEANNA MACKEY

I hope you were able to join us in September for our One Book, One San Diego author event with Heather McGhee, author of the 2023 selection, The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together. This year’s adult, teen and children’s selections exemplify courage, hope, advocacy and solidarity. Each title explores the significance of taking pride in where we come from and coming together across differences to accomplish what we can’t on our own. Check the One Book events calendar at kpbs.org/onebook and come read with us!

Give Smart—Plan Ahead

It’s not too late to make a 2023 charitable gift with your IRA. If you want to support KPBS and make a lasting impact, you have two great options through your IRA: a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) or lifetime income from a charitable gift annuity.

Each year, the IRS requires you to withdraw a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from your IRA. If you are at least 70½ years old, you can make a gift, a QCD, from your IRA without penalty. Give a one-time gift to KPBS without increasing your taxable income.

Or, use your IRA to fund a charitable gift annuity, which creates lifetime income for you through a gift to KPBS. If you are age 70½ or older, you can convert up to $50,000 of your IRA into a stream of income without paying federal income tax on the principal.

Advantages of funding a lifetime income gift from your IRA:

  • Guaranteed income for life with a KPBS charitable gift annuity
  • Meet your RMD without adding to your taxable income
  • Significant support for KPBS
  • Qualify for KPBS’ Friends for Life membership

Judy Woodruff Presents: ‘America at a Crossroads’

In an era of heightened partisanship, declining institutional trust, rising political violence and quickening social change, Judy Woodruff embarked on a two-year reporting project called “America at a Crossroads” to investigate the factors dividing Americans and to find out what can be done to stop these alarming trends. She traveled the nation, listening to academics and authors, parents on school boards and activists, local leaders, and even the president of the United States, to talk about the issues we face and what may be done to overcome them. She reported on the phenomena of negative partisanship—strong hostility from one party toward the other; she anchored these pieces on human experience, historical context and compassion.

“America at a Crossroads” airs Tuesday, December 19, at 9 p.m. on KPBS-TV.
