Fall 2019
A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT AND CEO, PAUL GROVE
I am thrilled to be back in the Tampa Bay region … and especially at WEDU!
After spending 12 years here prior to taking the CEO role at WTCI in Chattanooga, the past few weeks have been a great homecoming. I have reconnected with longtime friends, reminisced with former colleagues and gotten reacquainted with Florida’s culture, favorite eateries and summer weather. This is home!
As my family and I get settled, I’m proud to reflect on the efforts of WEDU to help bridge the achievement gap that impacts our students during the summer months. We forged a special partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Tampa to help students explore careers in public broadcasting. We formed a new educational collaboration with the Title 1 program of Manatee County Schools, The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature, and Manatee County Public Libraries to provide family engagement events and educator training through the Soar in 4 program. And we planned and participated in many educational kids’ events in our region.
Investing in education has always been a top priority for WEDU, and will continue to be so. And as a WEDU PBS member, you can be proud in knowing that the impact we’ve had on the lives of children is a direct result of your support.
Thank you for the warm welcome back to Tampa. I am blown away by your generosity and support of the station we all love.
Aidan Turner, Poldark
Poldark: The Final Season
We’re so excited to welcome Aidan Turner back to Masterpiece as the heroic Ross Poldark for one final season of intrigue and a farewell to the characters we’ve loved for five years.
Poldark has graced the WEDU screen for half a decade and captivated our viewers season after season. The characters have grown and we’ve journeyed with them … and in this fifth and final season, which premiered on WEDU on September 29, fans of the series can look forward to the ups and downs of life in Cornwall.
Will Ross and Demelza find peace with a simple life among their friends and family, or will adventure and drama call them away as it always has? What does the future hold for George in the wake of Elizabeth’s death … and what will new characters bring to the mix as the series comes to its close?
Need to catch up? All five seasons of Poldark are available to stream anytime, anywhere, on WEDU Passport – a special member benefit available to those who give $60 or just $5/month as a WEDU Sustaining Member. Visit www.wedu.org/passport/ to get WEDU Passport today!
College Behind Bars: A Second Chance at Life
Imagine earning your college diploma … while in prison.
Next month, WEDU will air College Behind Bars, a four-part film directed and produced by Lynn Novick that explores the world of higher education as experienced by incarcerated men and women.
Novick’s film explores how a group of young people who are serving time for serious, violent offenses are preparing to re-enter society for a second chance at life. It digs deep into their backgrounds, family histories, childhoods and the reasons for their convictions … and puts a spotlight on how the power of education is changing their lives.
In Novick’s own words, the film “challenges conventional wisdom about education and incarceration, and raises questions we urgently need to address. What ultimately is prison for? Who in America has access to educational opportunity? Who among us is capable of academic excellence? How can we break the cycle of recidivism? How can we have justice without redemption?”
