THE CONNECTION

Spring 2019

A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT WONYA LUCAS

Every day, the supporters of WABE 90.1 & ATL PBA inspire me.

First, I’d like to thank all the donors and Sustaining Members who stepped up with generous donations during our recent pledge drive.

WABE 90.1 & ATL PBA donors have also enabled us to present outstanding new programs including the new miniseries adaptation of Les Misérables (with a star-studded cast!) and the always-inspiring National Memorial Day Concert. Your support makes a real difference.

Moreover, because of your support, we’re bringing lessons from our Buried Truths podcast into area schools, teaching students about racism, injustice, and resilience in the American South.

Let’s keep working together!

David Oyelowo as Javert, Les Misérables

ATL PBA Introduces a Brand-New Adaptation of Les Misérables

Calling all fans of the classic Victor Hugo story, Les Misérables! PBS and BBC are proud to introduce a special six-episode miniseries based on the original novel, which premiered on ATL PBA on Wednesday, April 24th!

The epic drama stars Lily Collins (Rules Don’t Apply) as Fantine, David Oyelowo (Selma) as Javert and Dominic West (The Affair) as Jean Valjean. The series is written by multi-award-winning screenwriter Andrew Davies, best known for his work on House of Cards, Bridget Jones’s Diary and the PBS version of Pride & Prejudice.

The classic tale of France’s political unrest in the early 19th century has become a cultural staple over the years, and fans of the musical and novel alike will find things to love about this special television adaptation. The series will bring to life the dynamic characters and epic story you’ve come to know.

You can catch Les Misérables every week on ATL PBA at 9 p.m.

And now you can catch up on episodes of Les Misérables and all your favorite programs on ATL PBA Passport.

Every contribution makes a difference.

H. Johnson

If you’ve ever tuned in to WABE 90.1 on a Friday night, you probably fell under the spell of the blues thanks to H. Johnson’s popular Blues Classics show.

We’re so lucky to have this true Atlanta icon spinning the best of the blues starting at 10 p.m. every Friday. With access to WABE’s archive of blues vinyl and CDs, he handpicks some of the best examples of the genre. This is no run-of-the-mill blues program. H. Johnson digs deeper to bring you the blues standards by the masters of the genre, such as Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy and Koko Taylor, and also wonderfully obscure songs from lesser-known artists like J.B. Hutto, Earl Hooker and Bobby Saxton.

A longtime fixture on the Atlanta music scene, H. started his WABE 90.1 career in 1978 with his popular Saturday night show, Jazz Classics. In 2013, he added Blues Classics on Friday nights to the delight of blues fans in the Atlanta metro area. He’s been honored numerous times for his valuable contributions, and has interviewed hundreds of jazz and blues greats.

H. Johnson is now in his 41st year of enlightening WABE 90.1 audiences with his encyclopedic musical knowledge. Long may he run!

Tune in to Blues Classics with H. Johnson on Friday nights at 10 p.m.

Call the Midwife Returns

ATL PBA is excited to share season 8 of Call the Midwife!

The series left us heartbroken following the death of Nurse Gilbert at the close of the Christmas Day special. But this season, exciting newcomers will join the series’ familiar faces and breathe new life into Nonnatus House. In season 8, we welcome Harry Potter star Miriam Margolyes as Sister Mildred, Fenella Woolgar as Sister Hilda and Ella Bruccoleri as Sister Frances.

Set in the spring of 1964, season 8 will answer important questions such as whether the Queen will have a boy or girl; where Nurse Crane’s and Nurse Lucille’s romances will take us next; and what dynamic the two new Sisters will bring to Nonnatus House. Of course, the series will also highlight new and interesting health issues and humanize them as only Call the Midwife can.

Watch Season 8 of Call the Midwife weekly at 8 p.m.

Upcoming Events with WABE 90.1

May 21

As Buried Truths season two wraps up, we’ll host another culminating event at the Morehouse School of Medicine with host Hank Klibanoff, producer Dave Barasoain and some special guests known very well to fans of the podcast.

Buried Truths acknowledges and unearths still-relevant stories of injustice, resilience and racism in the American South. Season 2 tells the story of A.C. Hall, a black teenager mistakenly identified as stealing a gun in 1962 in Macon, Georgia. Through A.C.’s story, host Hank Klibanoff examines police privilege, racial conditioning, community activism and more.

Every contribution makes a difference.
