SPRING 2026

A WORD FROM OUR GENERAL MANAGER, DEANNA MACKEY

I recently attended a luncheon where the keynote speaker suggested we approach the upcoming America250 as a time to reflect upon our country’s full history throughout those 250 years and ask ourselves how we want to shape our country from this point forward. It was a timely speech as KPBS was finalizing its America250 plans.

Public media has found itself in the middle of the question of what Americans and the government of the people value. When Congress rescinded our funding last summer, it became apparent that the people and those who govern do not agree with each other. The loss of $4.3 million every year to KPBS’ budget was no small amount. How San Diegans like you stepped up to show your support after the rescission is a statement of how much this community values KPBS’ essential services.

Public media is America’s historian and KPBS is San Diego’s storyteller. We give voice to stories that might otherwise go untold. Our America250 project will help you explore our national and local history, reflect upon who we have become and ask what we want to be. We will announce our plans soon. Support like yours is what creates tipping points. It’s what ensures that facts stay louder than misinformation, that curiosity triumphs over indifference.

Journalism is worth protecting. Art is worth protecting. Individual voices are worth protecting. When you support KPBS, you protect your story and you protect San Diego’s place in history. Together, we will ensure this continues for generations to come. Thank you.

Every contribution makes a difference.

His transformation from hopeful young sailor to legendary figure of vengeance delivers unforgettable tension, rich emotion and remarkable performances.

‘Linda & Carlos: A Chicano Love Story’

Beginning as students at San Diego Mesa College and SDSU, they were at the forefront fighting successfully to increase Chicano student enrollment at universities and colleges. Cesar Chavez, president of the United Farmworkers Union, tapped them to lead the grape boycott in San Diego and later invited them to work for the union at its headquarters.

In 2000, they founded San Diego’s Cesar Chavez Service Clubs, a leadership development program for students in 22 public schools. Because of their love of and dedication to empowering young people, hundreds of students have been admitted to some of the top universities in the country.

‘Love All’ Shares the Story of a Barrier-Breaking San Diego Family

Witness the extraordinary journey of the Redondo family, a Filipino-American family with nine siblings from San Diego who found tennis in 1970s Southern California through their grandmother, her station wagon and a bag of rackets. This marks the beginning of their march toward pro tennis, exceeded only by their desire to be of service, shaping the cultural landscape of their community and beyond.

Guided by the legacy of “Mamita,” their grandmother, the story is one of resilience, sacrifice and family, illustrating how they rose above the barriers facing immigrants to achieve athletic excellence and community respect. Through intimate interviews, historical footage and a vivid look into the unique dynamics of this family, “Love All” offers a deep dive into the 1970s and 1980s tennis scene with a group of nine kids who looked nothing like tennis at that time.

Premiering on KPBS-TV and KPBS+ in May. Check KPBS-TV schedule for date and time.

Thoreau Revealed

The two-night film presented by Ken Burns explores the ideas that shaped his writing. With newly uncovered historical material, the filmmakers revisit the world Thoreau lived in and the cultural tensions he challenged. His reflections on nature, civic responsibility and moral courage are presented not as relics of the past, but as principles still relevant in modern debates.

The film examines how Thoreau’s work intersects with environmental stewardship, social justice and the importance of standing publicly for one’s convictions. The result is a compelling portrait that situates Thoreau in his time while highlighting the lasting impact of his ideas on American thought, activism and cultural discourse.

Revival of a Legend

Ranthambore National Park is home to one of the greatest wildlife turnarounds in modern history, and “NATURE: Legendary Tigers of India” tells that remarkable story. Decades ago, the park’s tigers were nearly extinct — only a dozen remained. Once hunted by dignitaries, including Queen Elizabeth II, they later gained crucial protection under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, laying the groundwork for an extraordinary recovery.

Today, more than 70 tigers roam the park. Much of what we know about them comes from the late conservationist Valmik Thapar, who spent 50 years documenting their lives. Drawing on his extensive archive and insights from family and colleagues, this special reveals the struggles and triumphs behind one of India’s greatest conservation successes.

“NATURE: Legendary Tigers of India” premieres Wednesday, April 22, at 8 p.m. on KPBS-TV. Watch live or stream anytime with KPBS+.
