THE CONNECTION

Fall 2019

A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT, WONYA LUCAS

Happy autumn to all of our members, listeners and viewers!

Your support is the reason why we had such an incredible summer full of programming that was fun, educational and exciting. And we have so much more planned for the coming months.

I’m thrilled to announce the recent launch of our brand-new program, Create & Discover Labs, thanks to a generous grant from Wells Fargo. This exciting initiative brings the thrill and discovery of science to area classrooms and helps students learn through hands-on activities designed for young minds.

Plus, with the 2020 Census approaching, the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta recently invested in WABE’s work reporting on the Census and why it matters to our community.

And of course, we’re looking forward to sharing a robust lineup of programming on our stations this fall. Your generous support makes it all happen.

On behalf of me and everyone here at the station, thank you!

Aidan Turner, Poldark

Poldark: The Final Season

We’re so excited to welcome Aidan Turner back to Masterpiece as the heroic Ross Poldark for one final season of intrigue and a farewell to the characters we’ve loved for five years.

Poldark has graced the ATL PBA screen for half a decade and captivated our viewers season after season. The characters have grown, and we’ve journeyed with them … and in this fifth and final season, fans of the series can look forward to the ups and downs of life in Cornwall.

Will Ross and Demelza find peace with a simple life among their friends and family, or will adventure and drama call them away as it always has? What does the future hold for George in the wake of Elizabeth’s death … and what will new characters bring to the mix as the series comes to its close?

Need to catch up? All five seasons of Poldark are available to stream anytime, anywhere, on ATL PBA Passport – a special member benefit available to those who give $60 or just $5/month as an ATL PBA Sustaining Member.

College Behind Bars

College Behind Bars: A Second Chance at Life

Imagine earning your college diploma … while in prison.

Next month, ATL PBA will air College Behind Bars, a four-part film directed and produced by Lynn Novick that explores the world of higher education as experienced by incarcerated men and women.

Novick’s film explores how a group of young people who are serving time for serious, violent offenses are preparing to re-enter society for a second chance at life. It digs deep into their backgrounds, family histories, childhoods and the reasons for their convictions … and puts a spotlight on how the power of education is changing their lives.

In Novick’s own words, the film “challenges conventional wisdom about education and incarceration, and raises questions we urgently need to address. What ultimately is prison for? Who in America has access to educational opportunity? Who among us is capable of academic excellence? How can we break the cycle of recidivism? How can we have justice without redemption?”

ATL PBA Welcomes Retro Report

What really happened?

That is the question that will be answered this November as Retro Report, the new weekly news magazine program, premieres on ATL PBA. It will tell the stories-behind-the-stories of some of today’s most important topics – from Colin Kaepernick’s bended knee during the national anthem to the reasons behind the strict drug approval laws in our country and more.

Produced by the nonprofit organization Retro Report, whose mission is to arm the public with a complete picture of today’s most important stories, the series will offer fresh perspectives, new insights and deeper understandings of the news stories that matter. StoryCorps

Recording our history is so important. Sharing and preserving the stories of our lives is what connects us to our ancestors and to future generations. It’s how we strengthen our bonds and carry our legacies forward.

That’s why StoryCorps exists! Since 2003, more than 80,000 people have shared life stories with family and friends through StoryCorps – which allows participants to record conversations and have them preserved at the Library of Congress, ensuring they remain a part of history. StoryCorps is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind, and millions listen to our broadcasts on public radio and the web.

StoryCorps is partnering with the Atlanta History Center and Public Broadcasting Atlanta to record, preserve and share the stories of communities in Atlanta.

Hosts Dr. Regina N. Bradley and Christina Lee

Bottom of the Map Podcast: A Wrap on Season One

Dope women taking hip-hop conversation in a new direction: That’s what WABE’s brand-new podcast, Bottom of the Map, is all about!

In the dynamic series, Atlanta-based journalist Christina Lee joins Dr. Regina N. Bradley – a Georgia-bred writer and researcher of African American life – to discuss all the ways in which hip-hop music makes its mark on our city and society … from culture to politics and more. Christina and Regina are true fans of the genre, and their chemistry vibrates through the airwaves.

Some topics explored in the show’s first season include AfroFuturism and the importance of representing communities of color in our portrayal of outer space; the ways in which hip-hop changes the world as a space for Civil Rights protest; and narratives of hip-hop fatherhood.

Bottom of the Map recently wrapped up season one … and if you didn’t tune in, you can catch up right now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or your favorite podcast app.
