SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021

A WORD FROM OUR INTERIM GENERAL MANAGER, NANCY WORLIE

There is so much to look forward to this fall!

To start, we announced our 2021 One Book selections on August 21. We are in the process of planning many author events and book discussions. I cannot wait to read along with all of you.

Speaking of great stories, we are excited to present “Muhammad Ali,” the newest documentary by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon, on KPBS-TV, September 19–22. It tells the riveting story of this American icon who inspired people all over the world with his message of pride and self-affirmation.

I’m also looking forward to our latest Explore San Diego local content program “Rebound” about two San Diego women who rebound from incarceration to find healing and hope through sisterhood, service and education. This will also broadcast in September.

It is your support that helps us provide programming and events that bring us together to celebrate community and humanity. Thank you.

Every contribution makes a difference.

“Muhammad Ali”

Ken Burns Presents “Muhammad Ali”

Muhammad Ali was a three-time heavyweight boxing champion who captivated billions of fans with his combination of speed, agility and power in the ring.

He also won hearts with his charm, wit and outspokenness outside of the ring. Ali challenged Americans’ racial prejudices, religious biases and notions about the role of celebrities and athletes in our society.

The new four-part documentary “Muhammad Ali,” by acclaimed filmmakers Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon, tells the story of one of the most impactful men of the 20th century, sharing the fighter’s inspiring messages of pride, self-affirmation, moral courage and sacrifice.

Premieres Sunday through Wednesday, September 19 through 22 at 8 p.m. and rebroadcast immediately afterward on KPBS-TV. Watch live or stream anytime with the PBS Video app.

Coming to KPBS-TV a New Cinéma Vérité Film, “Rebound”

Separated by different circumstances, two San Diego women rebound from incarceration to pursue higher education. Yet, their road is more than a little bumpy. With years of addiction and abuse behind them, both women navigate school, parole, raising young children, trauma and self-healing.

Will these women obtain a degree and find the new life they are looking for? To find out, watch “Rebound”—available on demand in the PBS Video app beginning the night of its TV broadcast premiere.

Premieres Thursday, September 30 at 9 p.m. on KPBS-TV. Watch live or stream anytime with the PBS Video app.

“Rebound”

Three “MASTERPIECE” Series You Don’t Want to Miss!

Also mark your calendars for season two of “Baptiste.” When the British ambassador’s family disappears on a skiing holiday in the Hungarian mountains, Baptiste becomes committed to finding the ambassador’s husband and two sons.

“Grantchester”

Finally, in season six of “Grantchester,” Geordie, Cathy, Will, Leonard and Mrs. C take a holiday together. However, their holiday break turns out to be anything but relaxing.

“Cinema Junkie”—A Podcast for Film Lovers

“Cinema Junkie” was first launched in 2015 by KPBS film critic Beth Accomando. This film and entertainment podcast series allows you to hear what filmmakers have to say about their work, what movies are worth seeing and which directors are breaking barriers in film.

Each episode features an in-depth interview with an artist, scholar, historian, geeky cinephile or author who can provide insight into a film, genre or profession. Podcasts come out every other Wednesday.

The podcast was relaunched in July with a new format and brand new features including “Geeky Gourmet” (movie-themed recipes), “Share Your Addiction” (listener raves), and “Cold Turkey” (listener rants).

In September, “Cinema Junkie” will explore Asian representation on screen. In October, the featured topic is spies. So keep an eye out for the next “Cinema Junkie” podcast!

KPBS is proud to air “American Veteran.” This four-part special examines the full range of experiences lived by the men and women of our armed services in the past and today.

The series promotes understanding of the powerful cultural identity shared by veterans from all five branches of the service, the often transformative nature of their time in uniform and their commitment to an ideal of service that often goes beyond active duty.

Catch “Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go For It” on “American Masters” in October for an in-depth look at the iconic and award-winning entertainer’s fight through racism and sexism to become a celebrated actor.

Beyond the racism she experienced as a Latina actor, the documentary—produced by Lin-Manuel Miranda—explores the lesser-known struggles Moreno faced on her path to her EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) status, including sexism, a toxic relationship with Marlon Brando and an attempted suicide a year before she won her Oscar.

Airs Tuesday, October 5 at 9 p.m. on KPBS-TV. Watch live or stream anytime with the PBS Video app.

Explore Time and Space on “NOVA: The Universe”

“Code Switch” and “Life Kit” Team Up for Tips and Advice

KPBS Donor Profile

Frank Sutton, an annual donor of KPBS, always held our TV station close to his heart. He particularly enjoyed the history programs that captured the arc of human imagination and adversity, as well as the wildlife featured on “Nature.” He was an intelligent, curious man and felt that our programs enhanced his quality of life.

Mr. Sutton grew up on Chicago’s South Side, earned a purple heart in WWII and then moved to California with his wife to be near the Pacific Ocean—a lifelong dream. When he passed away in 2019, he thoughtfully included KPBS in his estate plans so we can continue to make a difference in the community.

With this incredible gift, Mr. Sutton has helped create the “What If” endowment for KPBS programming that celebrates the human experience, creativity, nature and American civic life. Mr. Sutton’s legacy is one KPBS will never forget, and he will help us continue to make an impact in communities for many years to come.
