Spring 2020

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT AND CEO, PAUL GROVE

We hope your family is safe and healthy during this unprecedented global event. As we navigate the rapidly evolving coronavirus pandemic, I want you to know that WEDU is here for you. While we are doing our part by having the bulk of our team working remotely, we are more committed than ever to our mission of providing quality programming and trusted news amid these challenging times.

We are working hard to bring you national and local news that will cut through the chaos and provide information you need to make the best decisions for your family.

News and Information: Florida this Week will include guests from remote locations instead of in-studio, as we continue to bring you the most current updates on the coronavirus and how it will impact our community every Friday at 8:30 p.m. FRONTLINE: Coronavirus Pandemic will provide a special report on the government response and the human toll on April 21 at 9:00 p.m. Visit WEDU online at wedu.org for the latest updates from PBS NewsHour, Amanpour and Company, Washington Week, Next Avenue and more.

Support for Our Children: On March 23rd, we launched WEDU PBS At-Home Learning with a new schedule of programs that are assisting families with distance learning. Kids programming on WEDQ Kids 24-hour channel and PBS LearningMedia remain safe havens and are full of educational resources as well.

We’ve also created an EdConnect Distance Learning Resources at www.wedu.org/edconnect that incorporates information about PBS LearningMedia with a link to tutorials for setting up accounts, lesson planning tools and other aspects of the service. The page also features links to specific lesson collections, interactives, and more for all grades (Pre-K – 12).

Take an Entertainment Break: With so many of us staying closer to home and hyper-focused on the latest news, I encourage you to also look to WEDU as your entertainment oasis. With our great museums and cultural institutions closed, turn to WEDU for some inspiration on No Passport Required. Don’t miss out on the world’s Great Performances; escape to another era with Masterpiece: World on Fire, premiering this month. Take some time to teach yourself crafts and new skills with WEDU Create TV, with a full schedule of do-it-yourself programming.

Together, we will make it through this time of uncertainty. Be safe and stay healthy.

Call the Midwife

Call the Midwife Returns for Season Nine!

Your favorite team of medics and midwives is back on WEDU!

Call the Midwife returned on March 29 and promises to once again pull viewers into its dramatic twists and turns … the ups and downs of life at Nonnatus … the love stories and devastating losses that define the show we’ve all come to love.

Opening with the funeral of Winston Churchill in January of 1965, the new season brings unexpected challenges, changes, and old diseases that come back to haunt them.

Alongside the elation of birth, the midwives must cope with devastating cases of disease, death, and hardships.

Call the Midwife creator and writer Heidi Thomas says of the new season: “After a magical Christmas experience in the Hebrides featuring wild seas, stormy skies, and some very disobedient sheep, we return to the harsher reality of city life in 1965. Society is changing fast, and in season nine we will see Nonnatus House shaken to its foundations.”

Tune in to Call the Midwife season nine on WEDU. Sundays at 8:00 p.m.

Lemon Raspberry Muffins

Recipe courtesy of Adrianna Adarme of Fresh Tastes

Ingredients:

(yields 12 muffins)

  • 1/4 cup lemon juice (from 2 lemons)
  • 3/4 cup shaken buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2/3 cup white granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons neutral oil (grapeseed, vegetable oil or avocado oil)
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 6 ounces raspberries
  • 2 tablespoons turbinado sugar, for topping

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Place muffin liners in a muffin tin and set aside. If your liners are made of paper, you might want to spray them with cooking spray.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the lemon juice, buttermilk, melted butter, sugar, neutral oil, eggs and vanilla extract. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until barely combined. Add the raspberries.

Divide the batter among the twelve cavities in the muffin tin. Sprinkle the tops with turbinado sugar.

Transfer to the oven to bake for 7 minutes. Then immediately turn the oven temperature down to 350 degrees F and bake for an additional 10 to 12 minutes, until the tops are lightly golden brown and nicely shaped.

Let the muffins cool in the pan for 10 minutes and then carefully remove and allow to cool on a cooling rack.
