Victoria

The Beloved Masterpiece Series, Victoria

Fans of Masterpiece’s hit series Victoria rejoice: The beloved series finally returned on January 16 for its much-anticipated third season!

Once again starring Jenna Coleman as Victoria and Tom Hughes as Prince Albert, the series’s return promises new scandals, conflicts, romance and drama that will keep viewers hungry for more, week after week. In fact, Victoria writer Daisy Goodwin recently teased “more drama than ever before” in the third season.

With their fourth child on the way and turbulence in the monarchy, Albert and Victoria will navigate brand-new challenges and a level of excitement that you won’t find in history books.

This season will also introduce fascinating new historical characters, including Laurence Fox as the vainglorious Lord Palmerston and Kate Fleetwood as Victoria’s devoted but troubled half-sister, Princess Feodora.

There’s so much to look forward to in season three … and if you missed seasons one and two, it’s not too late to catch up! With ATL PBA Passport, you can stream the first two seasons at any time, from anywhere, on multiple devices!

Victoria airs on ATL PBA on Wednesdays at 8 and 9 p.m.

Buried Truths

New Season Coming This February

Buried Truths: Season Two

How far would white supremacists go – on the streets, in the courtrooms, in the legislatures – to preserve their racial dominance? And most importantly, why? Who were we back then?

If you tuned into our eye-opening, original podcast Buried Truths last spring, you followed veteran journalist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Hank Kilbanoff as he explored the untold mysteries and injustices of history through the story of three black farmers who attempted to vote in rural South Georgia … a place where white supremacists held power by suppressing the black vote.

The riveting series returns in February for its second season to tell a whole new story. Kilbanoff will explore a case that sounds and feels like it walked straight out of today’s news pages – an unpunished, fatal police shooting of a 17-year-old African-American high school student who was out walking with his girlfriend on a fall evening in 1962.

Listeners have called Buried Truths “exceptional” and “incredibly relevant.” You won’t want to miss the fascinating and engrossing new story coming this season.

Behind on season one? It’s not too late to catch up. Visit your podcast app of choice or listen at wabe.org/buriedtruths.

ATL PBA’s Upcoming Lineup

From brand-new seasons of the shows you love to premieres of programs you’ve never seen before, ATL PBA has so much to offer in the coming months.

Our viewers’ favorite antiques and collecting series Antiques Roadshow returned on January 7 for its 23rd season. Plus, Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. came back with all-new episodes on January 12.

January 16 marked the exciting return of Victoria, now back for its third season and promising more drama and intrigue than ever before.

Fans of American Masters can look forward to two special episodes: One focusing on Sammy Davis, Jr. airing February 22 and again on February 24, and another showcasing the remarkable solo journey of country music artist Charley Pride amid the racial complexities of country music.

Also in 2019: We’ll welcome new cast members and storylines on season eight of Call the Midwife, airing on ATL PBA in March. And viewers will enjoy the brand-new, three-part Masterpiece drama Mrs. Wilson, which will take viewers on a captivating journey through a world of disturbing secrets and surprises.

To catch up on past seasons of these and hundreds of other PBS favorites, you can become an ATL PBA Passport member! Visit atlantapba.org to sign up.

Lisa Rayam

Welcoming Lisa Rayam to Morning Edition

WABE is excited to announce that after an extensive search, we recently welcomed Emmy award-winning journalist Lisa Rayam as the new host and senior producer of Morning Edition.

A broadcast veteran, Rayam has strong ties to the Atlanta community. You may remember her from her 21 impressive years at Fox 5, where she was a reporter and anchor of the noon and 6 p.m. newscasts.

Over the course of her impressive career, Rayam has established herself as a tenacious, well-connected reporter and trusted anchor, and we are thrilled to welcome her experience, contacts and credibility to our WABE newsroom.

Listen to Lisa Rayam host Morning Edition weekdays at 6 a.m. on 90.1 WABE.

Sammy Davis, Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me

Debuting soon on ATL PBA is Sammy Davis, Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me – the first major film documentary to examine Davis’ complex, complicated life, his vast talent and his journey for identity through the shifting tides of civil rights.

The film explores Davis’ legendary career and his quest to achieve the American Dream in a time of racial prejudice and shifting political territory.

Featured in the film are new interviews with such luminaries as Billy Crystal, Norman Lear, Jerry Lewis, Whoopi Goldberg and others, plus never-before-seen photographs from Davis’ vast personal collection and excerpts from his electric performances in television, film and concert.

Sammy Davis, Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me premieres on ATL PBA February 22 at 11 p.m., and again on February 24 at 9 p.m.

Women, War & Peace II

This March, the bold four-part series Women, War & Peace returns for a second powerful run that will once again challenge the conventional wisdom that war and peace is men’s domain.

In its return, Women, War & Peace II will highlight the necessity of reframing women’s rights as fundamental to both human rights and global security. This season will highlight stories of women who stand up to fierce, unrelenting backlash in order to earn a political voice and a seat at the table – stories that may be lost to history otherwise.

The four-part series will spotlight women who are asserting and defending their human rights from Tahrir Square to Mumbai, Belfast to Bangladesh, the shantytowns of Port-au-Prince to the fraternities of American college campuses.
