Summer 2019

A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT WONYA LUCAS

WABE celebrates diversity and community year-round, and that made June – LGBTQ Pride Month – an especially wonderful time for our station and community. In this newsletter, you’ll read about how ATL PBA observed the month with special LGBTQ-focused programming.

Within this electronic newsletter, you’ll also read about the upcoming series I’m most excited about: Chasing the Moon. It’s a must-see for
space fans. Another exciting addition is our new podcast, Bottom of the Map. The hip hop conversation will never be the same!

I’m also thrilled to tell you about ATL PBA Passport. This new member benefit gives you access to an on-demand library of incredible PBS programming – including all of the programs highlighted below. To learn more, visit pba.org/about-passport.

Ed White, Chasing tthe Moon

Chasing the Moon

There’s no better way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing in 1969 than to watch Chasing the Moon, the landmark six-hour series premiering in July.

The film, directed by the Oscar- and Emmy-nominated Robert Stone, is a groundbreaking achievement that changed the way we view one of the most inspiring developments in modern American history.

Interviews with astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Mike Collins, Bill Anders, and Frank Borman take you into the heart of the fascinating science, politics and personalities involved with the race to beat the Soviets to the moon.

You’ll also meet key behind-the-scenes players like Poppy Northcut – the first female member of NASA’s Mission Control – and from the Air Force, Ed Dwight, the first African American to be trained as an astronaut.

Best of all, Chasing the Moon features astounding overlooked and lost archival material. This is the space race like you’ve never seen it before!

Airing July 8-10.

Every contribution makes a difference.
Hosts Dr. Regina N. Bradley and Christina Lee

Bottom of the Map

If you’re a hip hop fan – or just hip hop curious – you’ll want to tune in to the new podcast Bottom of the Map from WABE and PRX. In every episode, Atlanta-based journalist Christina Lee and renowned hip hop scholar Dr. Regina N. Bradley explore Southern hip hop culture and its impact.

Thanks to their fandom and expertise, you will hear a fascinating take on how hip hop is molding Southern culture and vice versa. Bottom of the Map is energetic, raw and as authentic as it gets.

Listen anytime on demand, with brand-new episodes every Monday.

Please note this program is rated E.

Congrats, Buried Truths!

We are so proud to announce that the first season of WABE’s Buried Truths podcast recently won two prestigious awards – the Peabody Award and the Robert F. Kennedy Book & Journalism Award. Both awards honor the most compelling and empowering stories across the media landscape.

Peabody judges discussed the episode telling the story of Isaiah Nixon exercising his right to vote in 1948: “The largely forgotten incident gains new immediacy when read alongside Georgia’s more recent struggles over voter suppression, helping us understand how the past touches the present.”

Buried Truths wouldn’t be possible without member support! We can’t thank you enough.

Shaun Evans, Endeavour

Endeavour Returns

Mystery fans, rejoice! A new season of Endeavour is upon us. The sixth season of the Inspector Morse prequel series returned Sunday, June 16.

Shaun Evans returns as a young version of the famously cerebral and solitary detective – and makes his directorial debut in the second, 90-minute episode. Evans is once again joined by Roger Allam (Game of Thrones) as his partner Detective Inspector Fred Thursday.

This season, set in the swinging 60s, finds Detective Sergeant Endeavour Morse sporting a whole new look that’s sure to cause mustache debates around the water cooler!

#TeamEndeavour will tackle a whole new set of murder cases, while adjusting to their new roles following the dissolution of the Oxford City Police and its merger with the Thames Valley Constabulary.

Catch season 6 of Endeavour every Sunday on ATL PBA.

LGBTQ Pride Month

LGBTQ Pride Month is celebrated each year in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall uprising in Greenwich Village, NY – a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the US. The last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as “Gay Pride Day.” The “day” soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events. Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, attracting millions of participants around the world.

Here in Atlanta, memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. On ATL PBA, we commemorated this month with programs that recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.

Stonewall Uprising

Terrence McNally

Terrence McNally: Every Act of Life

Terrence McNally, the complicated and brilliant Emmy- and Tony award-winning writer, is the subject for American Masters – Terrence McNally: Every Act of Life, which premiered on June 14. From Kiss of the Spider Woman to Ragtime to Dead Man Walking, Terrence McNally’s work proves the transformative power of art.

In addition to interviews with McNally himself, the film features reflections by many of his friends and notable actors whose lives he touched, including Christine Baranski, Edie Falco, Nathan Lane and more – plus the voices of Bryan Cranston and Meryl Streep.

McNally is one of America’s most outspoken champions of marriage equality and LGBTQ rights, so we’re proud to have brought you McNally’s story during LGBTQ Pride Month.

Rose Scott likes to say her show isn’t just about Atlanta, it’s for Atlanta – and that couldn’t be truer.

Closer Look with Rose Scott is a daily forum that digs deeper into what matters to Atlantans and dissects complex issues. In each episode, Rose goes beyond the surface, connecting dots, asking questions and giving context to how the stories in the news impact the Atlanta Region. But what many WABE listeners find the most refreshing about this popular show is that it gives voices to folks who don’t often get one.

Closer Look with Rose Scott brings together civic leaders and the community to showcase all viewpoints on critical issues that affect life in Atlanta and beyond.

WABE goes into the dynamic neighborhoods of our diverse city to provide context, discover stories and bring Atlanta to life. Closer Look with Rose Scott really does take a closer look!

Tune in with Rose Scott weekdays at 1 p.m. and 9 p.m.
