There is so much to look forward to this fall! To start, we announced our 2023 One Book, One San Diego selections in August at the Festival of Books. Go to kpbs.org/onebook to see the selection announcement. We are in the process of planning many author events and book discussions. I cannot wait to read along with you.
In October, Ken Burns returns with a riveting new series—”The American Buffalo.” The two-part series takes you on a journey through more than 10,000 years of North American history, tracing the animal’s evolution, significance to the Great Plains, near demise and relationship to the Indigenous people of North America.
There will also be a new season of “Out of the Boondocks,” a locally produced docuseries from our Explore San Diego Local Content Project. The series sheds light on Filipino culture and creativity through the lens of San Diego’s Filipino artists and innovators. Season 1 was wonderful to watch and I look forward to new stories from hosts Rio Villa and Jay Jay Maniquis.

From Survival to Symbol: ‘The American Buffalo’ by Ken Burns
The latest Ken Burns adventure explores the significance of the American buffalo. A film four years in the making, “The American Buffalo” journeys across the continent and dives into the historical and geographical timeline of one of the continent’s most iconic mammals.
With a specific focus on the buffalo’s ties to North America’s Indigenous people, the documentary traces how Native peoples relied on these animals for food and shelter, and how they in turn became a cultural symbol of the times. The documentary depicts the buffalo’s rapid demise due to the westward expansion by colonizers, and also describes subsequent efforts to reintroduce healthy buffalo herds.
“The American Buffalo” is a powerful tribute to one of the most important and lesser-known facets of North America.

Discover the Great Outdoors
Follow bestselling author and podcaster Baratunde Thurston everywhere from Utah to Florida on “America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston.” An outdoor enthusiast with a passion for sharing his love of nature with others, Thurston travels across the country in this six-part series to research the way nature plays a role in American culture and in our daily lives.
Thurston’s upcoming expedition will cover more regions of the country and focus on the link between the outdoors and health, how the outdoors can be made more accessible to everyone and the variety of experiences you can have in the most unlikely outdoor spaces.

‘Out of the Boondocks’
The team of Asian-American creatives has produced Season 2 of “Out of the Boondocks,” a docuseries highlighting Filipino-American culture and creativity. It covers those contributing through food, comedy, dance, media, wellness and more. Hosts and guests discuss pursuing creative paths amidst difficulties, with strong family and community support, and a deep connection to their Filipino and Indigenous cultures.
While the spotlight on Filipino culture is growing, its presence and reach in San Diego has always been mountainous. This docuseries brings some of those stories out of the boondocks.

‘Hope Street’ Season 2
The Port Devine station is joined by a new detective, Al Quinn (Stephen Hagan), who is a laidback breath of fresh air—that is until his willful daughter turns up and plunges him into a moral and ethical dilemma. Al struggles to juggle his duty as a police officer while protecting his daughter.
Meanwhile, underestimated Police Constable Callum McCarthy (Niall Wright) is always watching. “Hope Street” continues to combine traditional serial narrative storytelling with unique crime stories in each episode, always remaining positive, bighearted and life affirming.

One War, Five Countries, Unrelenting Impacts
Travel back in time and across the globe with Season 2 of “Masterpiece: World on Fire.” Society is in the midst of World War II, and the war’s effects are being felt by people everywhere, from Britain to North Africa.
In the latest installment of the hit show, lone pilots are instructed to destroy German bombers flying over Manchester as rescue efforts commence in the city and the Northern Blitz begins. Watch this engrossing depiction of life in wartime—both in and out of combat.

Martin Clunes Returns as ‘Doc Martin’
Return to scenic Portwenn for a new season of episodes that see Martin’s career hanging in the balance as he faces scrutiny from the General Medical Council following complaints about his approach to patients.
Louisa has resigned from her job as headmistress at the local school to pursue a new career in child counseling.
Meanwhile, Al accidentally proposes to Morwenna, and Mrs. Tishell has a new lease on life. Bert, Aunt Ruth and PC Joe Penhale also return.

‘While We Watched’ by POV Depicts a Battle Against Fake News
“Misinformation” is a term that has become all too recognizable—but what does the concept really entail? How do we stop misinformation from spreading, and who is leading the charge?
“While We Watched” takes audiences into Ravish Kumar’s newsroom, where he works tirelessly to continue producing trustworthy news for a society that doesn’t seem to be listening any longer. He’s up against fierce opponents—sensational headlines, the siren song of high ratings and a torrent of fake news—and it will take skill and determination to come out on top. Accompany Kumar on his quest for the truth.

Get to Know the Murky Waters of Glasgow in ‘MASTERPIECE: Annika’
For DI Annika Strandhed, each day consists of balancing the two greatest challenges in her life: leading Glasgow’s Marine Homicide Unit (MHU) and guiding her unruly daughter, Morgan, through her own teenage hurdles.
Season 1 of the hit “MASTERPIECE” show “Annika” included twisted family dynamics, shocking secrets being revealed, and unexpected characters. In the upcoming season, DI Strandhed continues to solve Scotland’s most complex and terrifying cases in a way only she can, all while working to keep Morgan out of trouble and trying to make room for her own personal life.

A Culture Like No Other

The Beat Never Stops for Max Roach
A leader in the sounds of bebop, Max Roach was an artist and performer unlike any other. His innovation in the musical world is detailed in the latest “American Masters” documentary, titled “Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes.”
Throughout his life, Roach drew inspiration from the inequities in society—inequities that he was also subjected to at times.
