NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2022

A WORD FROM OUR GENERAL MANAGER, DEANNA MACKEY

From the mid-term elections in November to preparing holiday celebrations with loved ones, it is going to be an eventful fall. When these two important national activities coincide, they can often feel at odds—one highlights our divisions, the other our connections. However, I think it is the perfect time to lean into that which makes our nation and its people so unique.

Through public media’s journalism, storytelling and community experiences, we address the divisions in our country and serve as a catalyst for people to hear each other and find ways to bridge divides to preserve our community and our democracy. Equally important is our role in celebrating our sense of place and what it means to be a San Diegan and our role in appreciation of the arts and the stories behind the creators in our community. All of us at KPBS are honored to be here for you with resources like the Voter Hub and programming that helps you relax with family, helping us all work and dream together as a collective. Thank you for supporting KPBS.

Every contribution makes a difference.

Congratulations to our 2022 Hall of Fame Honoree

Cameraman. Director. General Manager. Tom Karlo held these titles and more over his 45+ year career at KPBS. In that time, he forged relationships that advanced KPBS’ service to our community. Now retired, Tom continues to foster those relationships to strengthen KPBS at every turn. He is our biggest fan, our most passionate advocate and now our Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement honoree.

Established in 2010, the KPBS Hall of Fame honors the individuals and families who have made an impact on KPBS through their work, philanthropy and leadership. Inductees are celebrated in one of two categories: Lifetime Achievement or Visionary. Lifetime Achievement honorees are former staff whose work set new standards for public media. Previous Hall of Fame honorees include Gloria Penner, Ken Kramer and Dr. Stephen Weber, SDSU President Emeritus.

As the season begins, veterinarian James Herriot not only has to navigate the challenges of married life, he also has to adapt to the currents of his practice and new government mandates. A Disabled Dancer Chronicles Her Journey of Self-Discovery

At 27, Kelsey Peterson was paralyzed from the waist down after sustaining an injury while diving into Lake Superior. As a dancer, the injury was devastating, but with the support of the spinal cord injury (SCI) community, she found not only help adapting to life with a disability, but also acceptance and hope.

“Independent Lens: Move Me” chronicles Peterson’s internal struggle and her journey back to dancing in this riveting documentary. When an unexpected opportunity to participate in a clinical trial comes along, she is forced to ask herself what she really wants—she’s afraid that it might not work…yet part of her is scared that it could. As a co-director of this film, Ms. Peterson takes the reins to tell her story in a raw and personal style that brings viewers along on her journey of self-rediscovery.
