JULY/AUGUST 2020
A WORD FROM OUR GENERAL MANAGER, TOM KARLO
In the months of sheltering at home, I felt a strong need to connect with people, with places, and with stories. I suspect you felt the same.
More people than ever turned to KPBS to connect to the world and our communities. We watched the riveting history of genetics in Ken Burns’ “The Gene,” a fascinating look at rabbits in “Nature: Remarkable Rabbits,” the beauty of music with Andrea Bocelli in the Duomo di Milano, and local adventures in new episodes of “Crossing South” and “Ken Kramers’ About San Diego.”
We discovered the ease of using the PBS Video App to catch up on our favorite shows on our schedule. Parents and teachers relied on our At-Home Learning: Where Children Matter programming to adjust to distance learning. And we watched, listened, and read the latest news stories impacting our lives.
As I reflect upon the past few months and our future, I am grateful for the connection we found when we needed it most and for the connection we will continue to have. Your membership supports all that we do. I am honored that you choose to be with KPBS.
Thank you.

KPBS Presents “American Experience: The Vote”
KPBS is proud to present a brand-new edition of “American Experience.”
The two-part series “The Vote” chronicles the dramatic story of the hard-fought campaign waged by American women for the right to vote. The passage of the 19th Amendment one hundred years ago was, and remains, the largest expansion of voting rights in U.S. history.
Out of the women’s suffrage movement came trailblazing heroes both celebrated and unsung, and “The Vote” brings them all to life—along with the controversies over gender roles, race, and other disparities that continue to dominate our political discourse today.

“Secrets of the Dead: Viking Warrior Queen”
In 1878, archaeologist Hjalmar Stolpe excavated the remains of Birka, one of the oldest and richest Viking settlements in Sweden. When he did, he discovered a magnificent burial chamber—that of a warrior who might have sacked western Europe in the 10th century.
Fast forward to 1970: A young researcher studying the bones from the grave, noticed that the skeleton had female characteristics. And, years later in 2017, a team of Swedish archaeologists proved through a DNA study that the great warrior was, in fact, a woman.
But who was she? “Secrets of the Dead” will explore the possible backstory of this Viking warrior who was so ahead of her time.
Airs Tuesday, July 7 at 8 p.m. on KPBS-TV.

“I saw a TV spot with an actual KPBS donor and knew this is what I was going to do with my car I no longer need. I wanted my car to go toward something better than a junk yard. I’ve taken this car on many adventures with friends and family. I know that donating this car to KPBS would mean it’s in good hands and that this will help continue the programs that I watch all the time.”
