THE EXCHANGE

Fall 2021

A WORD FROM OUR CEO, JACK GIBSON

Thank you so much for everything you have done to support Arizona Public Media this past year and for choosing us as your trusted source of information and entertainment.

We’re closing the books on 2021, and we know that supporters like you are what helped AZPM emerge from another difficult year stronger than ever.

Because we have you by our side, AZPM has exciting plans for 2022. These include new seasons of TV favorites, plus some new shows you won’t want to miss. And our original radio programs, such as Arizona Spotlight, will continue to be available wherever you get your podcasts, so you can stay in the know while on the go.

For Ken Burns fans, we’re excited to share one of his newest projects, Muhammad Ali. The documentary is now available to stream with AZPM Passport, so our members can watch it anytime.

Most importantly, this coming year, AZPM will continue to create a more informed community, celebrate diverse ideas and cultures, and embrace creativity that helps Southern Arizona grow.

We look forward to reaching new heights together in 2022. Thank you for making everything we do possible.

Arizona 360 Spotlights Patrolling the Border

At AZPM, we work hard to keep you informed about local and national events that matter to you. We do this with our weekly show Arizona 360.

This summer, PBS NewsHour aired a segment from our local public affairs production, Arizona 360 about apprehensions at the U.S.-Mexico border.

In this episode, APZM’s own veteran broadcaster Lorraine Rivera reports from the ground with U.S. Customs and Border Protection during a sweep of the Sonoran Desert. Her firsthand account of a day spent examining the turmoil at the border provides a never-before-shared perspective of how we can aid migrants stranded there.

Airs Fridays at 8:30 p.m. on PBS 6.

NOVA: Universe Revealed

Our universe is full of secrets. Its spectacular vastness is difficult to contemplate — and it’s incredibly fascinating to learn about the mysteries of what lies beyond our planet.

This fall, AZPM will share NOVA: Universe Revealed, an awe-inspiring five-part series that explores our place in a universe shaped by forces across time and space. The series will take you inside black holes, across the Milky Way, through the big bang, and more.

Alongside the series, behind-the-scenes and additional content will be available on the web.

NOVA: Universe Revealed premieres Wednesday, October 27, at 9 p.m. Watch live or stream anytime with AZPM Passport and the PBS Video app.

Watch Wallander Anytime on AZPM Passport!

Are you a Wallander fan? Want to catch up on past episodes? AZPM is excited to announce that all four seasons of the series will become available with AZPM Passport beginning November 1.

Kenneth Branagh stars as Inspector Kurt Wallander in the captivating series based on the character created by best-selling author Henning Mankell.

Wallander is pitted against the creeping malaise affecting contemporary Sweden, where permissiveness and the collapse of the welfare state are slowly undermining the spirit of law and order. A maelstrom of bizarre crimes involving axe murders, scalping, random assassinations, and cyberterrorism taxes Wallander’s wits.

Nature Season 40

This fall, Emmy and Peabody Award-winning series Nature celebrates its 40th anniversary with new wildlife episodes full of action and emotion.

The Elephant and the Termite

First, The Elephant and the Termite explores the creation of one of Africa’s greatest wildlife meeting places and the site of extraordinary drama: the water hole. From mighty elephants to tiny termites, an entire community of creatures call the water hole their home.

The Elephant and the Termite premieres Wednesday, November 3, at 8 p.m.

Born in the Rockies

And, on Born in the Rockies, you’ll journey deep into the wild heart of North America’s Rocky Mountains in a two-part immersive special. Discover the iconic wildlife and rugged land of the Rockies while following newborn animals as they make their way in one of the most challenging and spectacular habitats on Earth.

Born in the Rockies airs Wednesdays, November 10 and 17, at 8 p.m.

American Veteran: Testimony from Those Who Have Served

AZPM is proud to air American Veteran. This four-part special examines the full range of experiences lived by the men and women of our armed services in the past and today.

The series promotes understanding of the powerful cultural identity shared by veterans from all five branches of the military, the often transformative nature of their time in uniform, and their commitment to an ideal of service that often goes beyond active duty.

Airs Tuesdays, beginning October 26, at 9 p.m.

Independent Lens Uncovers Racism, Ageism, and More

Stay in the know about today’s most pressing issues with two brand-new Independent Lens documentaries.

Ferguson Rises

On Ferguson Rises, Michael Brown Sr. reveals his personal story in seeking justice and healing after his son was killed by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri.

Ferguson Rises airs Monday, November 8, at 11 p.m.

Duty Free

And on Duty Free, you’ll take a look at the state of older Americans and the complicated obstacles they face. It often seems that our elders are invisible to the people around them — sometimes, that even includes their own families. Without help from their loved ones, millions of older people do not have enough money to get through retirement. Sian-Pierre documents his own mother’s journey to find work and uncovers the pervasive ageism older Americans face that leads many to financial instability.

Duty Free airs Monday, November 22, at 11 p.m.

AZPM Reporter Spotlight: Tony Perkins and Steve Jess

At AZPM, our reporters work around the clock to make sure you’re getting the trusted news you need right when you need it.

Two such reporters are Tony Perkins and Steve Jess, both of whom host AZPM newsbreaks around Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

Veteran reporter and announcer Steve Jess comes to AZPM from Montana Public Radio and is our midday and afternoon announcer. But he’s no stranger to AZPM – he previously worked at the station from 1985 to 1994 as news reporter and producer/host of the public affairs programs Kaleidoscope and Panorama. A California native, Steve is happy to return to the warmer climate of Arizona and looks forward to working at the station once again.

Tony Perkins joined Arizona Public Media in September 2014, and his career has spanned more than 30 years across two continents. He covered the trial of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer for ABC Radio News in the 1990s, covered hundreds of court cases as a daily legal journalist, and reported on the same number of athletic events as a sports reporter. We are grateful for Tony’s expertise and professionalism, which adds so much to the AZPM newsroom.
